First post. Good to meet all you guys and I hope to stick around for a while.

I don't know of anyone that uses the gutless method (see link below) of deboning a deer in the field. Seems like a lot of people do it, I just dont know of any in NC. Most of my buddies simply drag the deer out. Some questions:

- Do any of you guys use this method?
- Is it legal in NC? What about the legality of leaving rib meat behind? (Some people dont bother with the rib meat, and some do.)
- I guess you tag and leave the animal sex identifiers intact?

There are lots of websites that explain the gutless, or "no gut" method, but this one seems to be the easiest to follow and has good video (although it is elk).

http://elk101.com/webisodes/gutless-video/

Assuming you are only going after the meat and not a trophy, this seems to be an efficient way of harvesting. Skin and debone on the ground, then backpack the meat to the cooler in truck. If you can leave the carcass in the woods, this seems too easy. If you have to bury the carcass, maybe it is no less work than muscling the deer out.

I am sure I am missing something here. Any thoughts?

Would you prefer that they be packaged in certain size bags to make it easier to put out? Everyone I have spoke with say that they would prefer to hunt over apples as oppossed to corn. Do you agree?

Some Questions from a Non-Resident

After reading the Hunting and fishing Regulations book, twice and asking as many locals that would even entertain my time I have several questions...

After reading the Hunting and fishing Regulations book, twice and asking as many locals that would even entertain my time I have several questions pertaining to Deer hunting in NC this year. I appreciate any feedback in advance...

Background: I am a Contract worker currently working in Butner, NC. I hail from back up north in NH but spent 4 years of my life stationed at Fort Bragg. I never once hunted while stationed at Bragg due to training schedules, ignorance and a serious problem with where to keep and store my hunting stuffs. My hunting knowledge is completely based off of NH laws, which are surprisingly similar to NC's with the exception of where I can hunt. I'm also pleasantly surprised with the QUANTITY of tags, and deer I have seen in the area :D I plan on ONLY hunting with a Muzzleloader while I'm here.

Question one: Access. Where and how? I understand how the Game Lands regulations apply, but I'm VERY uncertain about private property. Back north unless private property is posted and or signed with "hunting with permission only" you're free to hunt on that land under "current use" statues. I PLAN on asking for permission and establishing some relationship with LO's of where Im trying to hunt... but what if that doesn't pan out for me?

Question two: Processing. I know that unlike back home I wont have the chance to butcher my own meat here. I'm looking for any feedback as to a reliable, competent and hassle-free butcher in the area. I don't mind eating the cost of this, but I have NO idea on how to find these guys. I've tried locals with little success. It's getting close to season and I'm starting to sweat the small stuff here.

Question three: Check-in and tagging. I understand the tagging process... but with the deer population abundant here, and check in stations difficult to find by simple google search I'm kinda at a misunderstanding. I can phone in tags, or do it online but I prefer to weigh and check in deer the same way we are required to back home. It's more a blanky-type problem. I'm merely concerned about getting my bag hammered by local game wardens if I miss-step the process by accident!

Thank you for any help ladies and gents!
