Ruff Hunter
Four Pointer
OK there's a couple of threads going on about grouse hunting so oi thought I would stream line it into one....hope that's OK!!
They are pretty good....i like to slowly fry mine in a butter and wine sauceBeing a flat lander down here along the roanoke river basin we grew up quail hunting , wich we have very few of these days. I never had a chance to eat a grouse, are they as good on the table as a quail?

What kind of dog are you hunting with nchunter2? I ask because I'm trying to get into grouse hunting next year with my Brittany. He's just 12 weeks old now so he won't be ready for another year yet, but I'd like to go with someone with experience to gain some knowledge and insight. Just saw that you were in Catawba Co as well and thought I'd ask.
I don't really have a place to go to put him on any quail or pigeon, unless I pay to go on a guided hunt or something of that nature. My folks own some property up near table rock in the Pisgah National Forest and that's why I had grouse in mind. I'm a novice when it comes to this type of hunting and am looking for some direction.
Lutz, you should look into Cool Springs Hunting in Statesville. They have a dog training club that meets once or more a month and the guy sells quail and other birds for the training days. Only like $40 for the year or something like that. There's also a place out near Pinehurst/Rockingham area called the Sandhills Pointing Breed Club that has homing pigeons for dog training. Cool Springs is much closer to you though being in Catawba Co. Either way, I would definitely be putting the dog on birds as much as possible this year in the off season, even if you aren't shooting them just to get him smelling them regularly.
PM me if you want any more info.
That is hilarious. I bet that bird scared you when it landed.
