Garner Cabelas Grand Opening

I live 35-40 minutes away and probably wont be back in until dove season rolls around. Well unless the ole lady is shopping and I need to kill some time. I left empty handed as well, along with most people I saw. I did not find the guns at the gun counters to be all that knowledgeable in my opinion. All kinds of misinformation being handed out from many of the conversations I overheard. I honestly expected more, but ship to store is a nice option as my wife rides close to it almost everyday on the way home. Negative is you have to pay sales tax now that they have a physical location in NC.

Well I think it's great. The animal mounts are great. The store is a couple of miles from the house and I've been 3 times the last time just to look at the taxidermy. It puts dang bass pro and gander to shame. Field and stream is a close second. They ain't going to build the big stores of old with restaurants and meeting rooms etc. So get over it . You guys thst hate it move out of the way so I can have room to push my buggy around the store. :D Larry R come on down and I'll show you around.

I figured, since everybody, was going to Cabelas Grand Opening, I'd make my 1st trip, to Bass Pro Shops LOL.....Plenty of parking, no crowd, wasn't too impressed.

They should have put it on I-95 if they really wanted to make some money. Maybe around the outlet malls near Smithfield? I'm not sure, but are there any Cabelas on I-95? I sometimes think that these corporations set themselves up to fail.

If that's the case, they should of built the thing in Benson, at the corner of 40 & 95. Location is fine in my opinion.

I went Saturday, figured it would make for a good time. Rain was coming so I didn't feel like sitting in the house. Meet my brother there and then grabbed some lunch. Picked up some 22lr for some reason.

If I want to look at mounts I will go to a museum. I went to buy turkey clothes and guess what? I have more in my house than they had in the store.

Location is great, easy to get to, good visibility, and at the intersection of two major arteries leading to eastern NC. What sucks is that they have more space committed to boats, tractors and four wheelers (chinese tractors at that) than they have committed to ALL clothing, which in my opinion has been one of Cabelas strengths over the years. You can swing a dead cat and easily get a better boat, tractor of four wheeler deal and a better product. They need to get rid of that crap and put in what sells, clothes and gear.

Haven't had a chance to visit yet,but I was in the store in Bowling Green,KY last week, and was told it's almost identical to the new Cabelas in Garner..... Pretty small and under stocked. their turkey hunting supplies were nearly completely depleted.

I haven't been yet. I am waiting for the crowds to die down.

I do find it interesting all the "retail specialists" on here who know what they should stock and where they should have put the store.

Seems to me that I don't recall any of you guys running a multi-million dollar retail business. These Cabela's guys must be idiots!

Well the problem is that the entire sporting goods industry is down......look at firearm manufacturers and the hit their profits have taken in the last year or so......lots and lots of folks have run out of money to buy stuff like guns and ammo....it only makes sense that those same things will make their way to the retailers....that is exactly what we are seeing.

Cabelas had been moving to smaller stores for several years. I have been to their flagship store in Nebraska and it was awesome. I have also been to the one in Buda Texas as well and it is impressive. Most of the 'destination' stores were built in the 90's and early 2000's.........even bass pro is building smaller stores now.....the cabelas was about what I was expecting......their quality of merchandise is far superior to any of the other retailers around...

I love the fact they are here, but we all expect different things. I am a duck hunter and they literally had nothing on hand. Do not think I even seen any Taxidermy ducks, couple geese, but no ducks. During the off season I try to stock up before the season rolls around. Low and behold, nothing to be found. Ammo prices are in line with Dick's.

I got the feel that the fishing section was mostly stuff transplanted from another region of the country. It was like they were using excess inventory or something from somewhere else. Loved all the taxidermy. Couldn't find much turkey stuff. Glad to see a little reloading supplies. Didn't get a chance to look at the guns much but appeared to be a decent selection. Had some nice clothes but have no idea about the prices.

Remember you can use the ship to store for heavy or large items to get free ship if they do not carry in the store and just swing by and pick up when you want.
I needed fishing gear they did not have in the store and it was there the next time I went waiting on me.

I have been to the Cabelas in Pa.and even though the Garner store is smaller I am glad they are here and open. The more competition stores have ,the better sales and selection they will have. I was not disappointed at all.

Yep, I have a Blue Ruger MK II 22 LR being shipped there now.. should be in Wed or so.
300$ not bad on a hard to find gun.

Did you buy it thru their online gun room or how did you swing that gadget?

Glad you didn't hang up Mr Gadget, as I'm sure I would have been ready to do!

One thing that I meant to mention, and ONLY the people on this forum will ever understand. Is that for MONTHS, I have been driving by the big billboard on 440 that said Cabelas Garner, "Grand Opening April 16th".
I have stared at that sign EVERY time I've gone by it (scores of times), and smiled :D.

As luck/fate/whatever would have it the DAY I drove to the Grand Opening, the MOMENT I passed this sign, two workers on the billbaord platform pulled some ropes, and.......

right in front of my eyes, I watched the verbiage on the right hand side of the billboard change from "Grand openi....." to "NOW OPEN"!!!!!!

I could explain how cool that moment was to every person I know who doesn't hunt, and they'd never understand like buddies I have from this forum would.

There is some room for improvement yes, but their CS was great both times i went. I really liked their firearms department, and my only complaints on the store over all are, their used guns are slightly on the higher side and i didnt see alot of rifle reloading supplies/dies but i may have just over looked that section. They had alot of pistol reloading gear so i may have just been looking on the wrong side of the isle.

I went Monday also. Couldn't find a turkey vest to save my life. Couldn't find someone to ask either. Went to BPS and after visiting both in the same hour I'm not sure when is the next time I'll be back in this Cabelas.

I saw a single shot shotgun for $220. A autoloader Winchester for a grand. Their used guns were crazy expensive. It was too crowded for me to a look at the new guns when I went the other week. The howdahs cost as much as legally getting a short barrel shotgun.

That said, it was nice to see different gun furniture available.

Place was packed but they had a soiled new heavy heavy 3 or 4 layer wool coat it the bargain area for 250 bucks. It would have been perfect for a NY hunt but not so great here. Glad I didn't miss anything in the gun room. My kids were crazy and I only had about 30 minutes. Loved the taxidermy. As far as clothing I liked how F and S carried Woolrich and Filson that added a touch of class but last time I was there they had severely downsized that section. Guess Cabela's and F and S are the two I like best of all the new stores.

I was at field and stream a while back and could not see the benefit to having a store. I drive an hour or better to go to those stores and the prices are equal or less to what i can buy online. Free shipping seems to be happening more and more often lately and i cant see buying in store wht i can click on and have sent to my house. They should t put local gun stores out of business. The guns and ammo were much higher than i see locally. I think rio shells were $75/case the last time i was there. Remingtons have been $56 locally lately and fiocchis are almost always in that $60ish dollar range. The .10/round .22 prices were unreal too, thats getting to pistol reload prices. With lead bullets, that is above and beyond reload prices.

I like handling clothing especially specialized clothing. I posted a while back on the Cabela's in GA. Their highly regarded winter clothing had poor stitching thin cheap materials and terrible zippers. I can justify the higher cost for the ability to lay hands on it. Before the accident I was a 52 chest 33 waist and extra long. Clothing fit was very difficult. I know some companies have the clothing guide but nothing beats trying it on.
