Splitting Axe

I've been wanting a splitting axe for some time and decided I liked the idea of the concept of penetrating like an axe then wedging the wood apart when a maul is not needed. I tried a Collins out for a while but the rubber grip was way to tacky to slide, I hate the feel of fiberglass handles, and it's just plain ugly. The head preformed well though. A little time and work and I now have it hung at 29-1/2". After testing it out, this thing feels and swings awesome. It doesn't bounce back like the glass handle did either.

I like it.

Where did you get it and how hard was it to remove the head?
did you just cut and drill it out?

Yep looks good. Try the fiskars out sometime.

I picked one up the other day and held it at the store the other day. I guess it's one of those things you have to actually use to like. It feels terrible in my hands. I hear lots of good reviews on them though.

Ace hardware. 30 minutes to remove and clean, trying to figure it out as I went. You could do it in ten. I chiseled out epoxy and took my time.

Drill the mess out of it then knock the handle loose. Dremel the rest of the epoxy out. I used a little cylinder shaped bit with spiraled ridges.

Lowes and Home Depot have them too. They are all different brands but the same style. Ace had the cleanest looking ones. Home Depot's are stamped Mexico. They are all made in Mexico, just depends if you want it stamped on or not.

The bottom of the eye is considerably smaller than the top. Have a wide wedge on hand.

Cool
like the fact no stamp.

I wondered about the taper.
I have used gorilla glue in the past to fill the void along with the wedge.

If I do one I may rebore the hold to true it up and dump the taper..

There is no need for that I don't believe. The taper locks the head on. I used almost all the supplied wedge that came with the new handle to fill the eye. It filled nicely with careful fitting.

I probably could have trimmed a little off the bottom of the wedge and seated it a little harder to give it a little more muffin top.

I bought one with that profile from Lowes, manufacturer said the handle was indestructible. They apparently didn't let my son field test....

I could break an anvil as a kid. Broke a through handle metal pipe handled splitting wedge as a kid. I missed my calling as a field tester.

Had a few stubborn pieces I had to monster maul, but for the most part this wood was split with the splitting axe today. Kinda hot out.

That's a neat idea and a very good job with the splitter. I never have liked fiberglass handles with any tool..

So, after using it a bunch, it's not my favorite. For light stuff that you would be just fine to use a regular Jersey for, it works good. Anything past that I'd rather use a maul.

Fiskars is a workhorse. I'm about productivity and I'm rough on stuff. No wood handles allowed.
