TWENTY HUNTERS CHARGED IN BLACK BEAR BAITING CASE
MARYVILLE, Tenn.---In connection with the opening of the bear hunting season, TWRA Wildlife Officers have charged twenty hunters with violations related to the illegal hunting of black bears while using bait in Blount Co.
In the early morning hours of Monday, Sept. 26, several TWRA officers made contact with two groups of black bear hunters who turned hounds loose at two baited sites on Chilhowee Mtn. off of Montvale Rd. Officers say that the baited sites consisted of candy making the hunt unethical by discouraging fair chase. Baiting black bears can also have a negative impact by encouraging habituation to human foods. Once bears become habituated to unnatural foods, they generally seek out garbage cans, dumpsters, campsites, etc. leading to nuisance behavior.
The 600-acre tract of private property where the violations occurred is located directly across Montvale Rd. from the Foothills Wildlife Management Area. Illegal baiting of black bears in this area is also likely having a negative impact on legal hunting by drawing bears from the management area and surrounding private properties.
The weeklong season that began on Sept. 26 goes through Oct. 2 is open for the use of dogs in Blount, Sevier and portions of Cocke and Jefferson Counties.
The hunters charged in connection to the case are set to appear in Blount Co. General Sessions Court on November 18 at 9 a.m.

Baiting with candy is a lowlife thing to do,last time I heard of someone getting caught doing it cost them $10,000 dollars and loss of hunting license for life.

agreed,,,,,,just seeing the teeth and overall condition of a bear that has had too much exposure to that stuff will convince you,,,,,

Won't a thing happen to them. They havent released names yet but a buddy knows several of the guys. Family members and some of them this time been busted before. Good lawyers and lack of caring if you get caught will keep this bunch doing exactly what they've always done.................

Personally IMO, if the property wasn't beside a wma, they wouldn't have tried as hard to catch them as they did.........just sayin'.......
