If my swamp freezes.....

Will Woodducks hit open water even if it has very little cover if the swamp freezes over? Have not seen the first Mallard where I hunt in Northampton.

They'll move to find open water. That could be a nearby river or it could be another timber swamp 100 miles to the South. Just depends.

Gotcha. We have an open pond with a few cypress trees close (a few hundred yards) to the swamp I hunt. Was wondering if I should set up there as a plan B.

If the swamp just froze the previous night I would try to bust a decent size hole for them before shooting time.

If it's been locked up tight a few days the pond and a prayer may be a better option. In my experience it doesn't take long being frozen for birds to move on. Maybe two days
