OT - Health Insurance

Way off topic but I need some help.

I am self employed and have always had health insurance through my wife's company, at least for the last 10 years. She is getting ready to have a job change which will mean we have to buy our own insurance.

From what I can tell, everything now, even for self employed, is basically either short term policies or run through obamacare. I don't need or qualify for obamacare.

Where the hell do I get health insurance that is not short term?? They really mucked this stuff up big time it looks like.

On a serious note..........will your wife eventually have coverage available at her new job?
May be worth looking into COBRA if it is a short term wait for coverage.

Not sure yet, she may go to work for me:D
we may have to go the cobra route but that is too expensive to consider for long.

You nailed it. It is a disaster and so far the eunuchs in charge of the Republican Party has not repealed it!

For an individual policy(non employer) you have to go through BCBS in NC. Currently only option in individual market that meets the federal mandate. There are no options in NC either employer policy or BCBS. You can sign up on their website.

I don't know if Cobra is the current short term EXPENSIVE option, but being self employed like yourself, through my MRS job, when she left I was in your shoes. Used Cobra for a while, but I ended up getting an HSA and maxxed it out every year. Felt like a waste the years I didn't use it, but when I needed it it was right there!.

Hate to tell you but BCBS is your option. No matter what it's all expensive. OC screwed up insurance. Mine has doubled over the past three years. I have worked for myself for over 30 years. I could buy a second house for what my premium is.

I asked my girlfriend about your situation she works for an insurance broker and she said you can call BCBS and set up a small group plan it should be a little cheaper than an individual plan but wont be cheap over all nothing is these days.

Wow this is a mess on every angle. So much wrong with.

First, there is alot of misinformation in the market evidently. I have just been told that BCBS is NOT the only game in NC. I think it is as far as the welfare babies insurance but Aetna, Cigna and United have all told me they can write me.

The crazy thing is, unless I have a qualifying life event, I am not allowed to sign up for insurance but two times per year.
Premiums are high for sure but the problem is I have to pay anywhere (depending on plan) from 10,000 per year to 44,000 per year in deductable, after my 12,000 per year in premiums, PLUS the 20% co insurance on everything!!!

This is really proven to me that we are starting to lose our freedoms in this country. The fact that I cannot sign up anytime I want or shop around and change insurance anytime I want shows me we are turning into a socialist country.

All healthcare insurance is now regulated by Obamacare.

This is why folks need to contact Congress over the current "repeal and replace" pushed by Trump.

Obamacare has really "screwed" a lot of folks over.

Things have to change.

My 88 y.o grandma and grandpa pay around $1200/mo for insurance.....absolutely ridiculous.

Id like to know who is getting "free" health care. I applied because it was required for me to while I was finishing school...didnt "qualify" for free and the only option....bcbs was $500/mo for a dogshit policy.

Well my Sister is getting her health insurance at a very reduced rate, not free but about $120 per month so she told me. I don't know how good her insurance is and she knows how I feel about someone else helping to pay for her health insurance while their premiums go sky high! My Mom pays $200 per month for BCBS and she is in her upper 80's, her insurance is very good with paying..
