Ft. Fisher Hermit

The 'North Pond Hermit' made me think of Robert Harrill, the Ft. Fisher Hermit. Though I don't think the two life styles compared.
Just wondering if anyone here remembers him, I being much younger then had the opportunity to meet him in 1969.

Never met Robert but used to see video's of him on tv at times when reporters interviewed him. I think he died in 1972 under suspicious circumstances..

We used to stop in and see "The Hermit" as he was called around Fort Fisher. He was always friendly enough. Lived in a block/wooden structure in an area that looked like it was prepped with mortars. He was very dark skinned/tanned and had curly dark hair and beard. He had an old frying pan he would leave out for donations. My uncle would sometimes take him food and drink. This was the late 50's and 60's.

I watched a documentary about him on PBS, or the NC channel that the Carolina outdoors show comes on. I had never heard of him but the TV show was pretty good.
